The Brainwashing Trainers
Imagine. Create. Share.
Since 2008, the Kids4Kids My Story Creation annual story writing and illustration competition has provided primary students across Hong Kong with a creative platform that enables the budding writers and artists to imagine, create and share their stories.
This story was written and illustrated by kid(s) who participated in the Kids4Kids annual 'My Story Creation competition'. We hope to celebrate all the kids who used their creativity and imagination to create a story by giving them an opportunity to custom print their story, and be able to share and inspire other kids to create their own story.
Proceeds from the sale of this custom print story will help fund the Literacy Development Programmes at Kids4Kids to provide creative learning opportunities to low resourced communities in Hong Kong. By buying a Kids4Kids custom print story, you are not only applauding the future artists & authors of Hong Kong but you are also making a difference in a child’s life!

“Where are my Adventure Trainers?” cried James looking around his room. The place was a mess. Everything was on the floor, even his clothes. He was looking under his desk when he heard his sister, Frances yell, “Hurry, you slob! We haven't even bought the Adventure Trainers yet, remember?”

James brushed aside her insult, put on his normal shoes and exclaimed, “It's Adventure day today. We're going to be the only ones without Adventure Trainers! How could you forget?”
“It's not my fault you forgot to remind Mum!” Frances retorted.

Suddenly, they heard the bus pull up in the distance, so they ran outside to catch it. However, the bus moved faster than their feet did.
“James! We missed the bus because it took you so long to get ready!” she scolded.
“Now we're going to be late,” Frances whined.

Their bickering echoed across the neighbourhood as they trudged all the way to school. James complained, “We're going to get in trouble.” He kicked a rock in frustration.
“What am I supposed to do? Save the day or something?” Frances snapped. Suddenly, their classmate stumbled past with a brainwashed expression.

“Hey, Layla!” Frances called out. Without responding, Layla continued to walk with blank eyes.
“What was that?” James whispered.
“Did you upset her again?” Frances retorted, “Not everything is my fault!” As they quarrelled, James noticed his friend, John robotically tapping on his calculator.

“John usually hates Maths,” James gasped in surprise.
“Look,” Frances nudged her brother. Everybody was either reading or writing. Those sitting had straight backs like rulers. Strangely, the kids were entering the school in single file. The only sound which could be heard was the squeaking of everyone's Adventure Trainers.

As the duo straggled past the students, excited murmuring could be heard from the principal's office.
“Adventure day was pure genius!” Principal Hurworth jeered, “It seems like those Adventure Trainers were a huge success.” The two felt chills run down their spines.

James' eyes lit up and he ran down the hall to find the nearest student. It happened to be Layla and he began removing her Adventure Trainers.
“Now is not the time for you to be weird!” Frances hissed. Immediately after James removed the shoes, Layla's eyes fluttered, “Where am I?”

“Frances, don't you see?” James cried, “The Adventure Trainers are
brainwashing our schoolmates!” Frances realised what he was onto and exclaimed,
“You're a genius! James, I'm sorry I've been arguing with you.” James replied, “It's okay. I haven't been saying nice things to you either.”

They both smiled and worked together to remove everyone's trainers. People were waking up, confused but safe.
“You'll always be my brother, James,” Frances hugged him. James said, “We're much better working together than fighting each other. This really is adventure day after all!”
