The Adventure of N700 ISABEL CHAN

The Adventure of N700
Imagine. Create. Share.
Since 2008, the Kids4Kids My Story Creation annual story writing and illustration competition has provided primary students across Hong Kong with a creative platform that enables the budding writers and artists to imagine, create and share their stories.
This story was written and illustrated by kid(s) who participated in the Kids4Kids annual 'My Story Creation competition'. We hope to celebrate all the kids who used their creativity and imagination to create a story by giving them an opportunity to custom print their story, and be able to share and inspire other kids to create their own story.
Proceeds from the sale of this custom print story will help fund the Literacy Development Programmes at Kids4Kids to provide creative learning opportunities to low resourced communities in Hong Kong. By buying a Kids4Kids custom print story, you are not only applauding the future artists & authors of Hong Kong but you are also making a difference in a child’s life!

Midnight... dark, cold, and drizzling at the platform in Osaka Station. N700, the Shinkensan train had finished the day's work and was resting, and receiving routine cleaning and repairs. He spotted Edith on a bench, and asked, “Why are you here at this time?”

“Someone stole my luggage.” Edith could no longer hold her tears,”I am now starving and cold.”

“Um, come on in to the catering car.” N700 suggested, “Eat some food and have a sleep.”

After some snacks and drinks, Edith opened up, “I came from Korea to see Japan. But now, I don't even know what will happen tomorrow. I really admire you. You visit the big cities everyday.”

“Not … as good as you think.” N700's face grew dim as he stared blankly at the poster of a train among cherry blossoms, “I whiz by Mt. Fuji everyday but I never get close enough to take a good look. I like quiet villages. I do not like bustling cities.”

Edith tempted, “How about sneaking out and have an adventure … with me?”

Before dawn, N700 quietly rolled out of the station and left Osaka City. Together, they enjoyed really good local food. They even stopped by a village station and watched a band performing on the platform.

They planned carefully the way back to Osaka by marking the map … until they met a butterfly.

“Hi, I am Selina. What are you guys doing here?” the butterfly merrily danced around and asked.

“We are out to see Japan …” Edith answered, “and by the way, wow! You look gorgeous!”

Selina fluttered cheerfully. “Talk about looking gorgeous, wait till you see my home town, where heaps of butterflies rest on trees. Do you want to go there?”

“You bet!” said Edith.

Perched on the windscreen, Selina sounded out orders. “Go straight on … turn right … turn left.” Before long, she froze, “Oh, no!”

“I'm terribly sorry.” Selina blushed, “I know all about flying, but I don't know a thing about how to travel on railway tracks.”

They were lost, stuck in a small village station. They didn't know what to do next. Then they saw a local train, Tom.

Edith whispered, “Why don't you ask him for help?”

N700's nose turned up, “I don't want to … they are smelly, slow and noisy.”

While they hesitated, Tom asked, “May I help you?”

Edith took a deep breath, went forward, and explained the situation to Tom. Tom quickly brought up a digital map on his console to find a route.

“Um, let me see … you need to cross three districts to reach the main track.” Tom muttered.

Tom escorted them to the border and handed them over to a friend, also a district train, who guided them onto the Shinkansen track. From there N700 whizzed back to Osaka.

Since that day, N700's view on the local train changed completely. He now knew even though they were slow, not pristine clean, they served the people perfectly well. Good service was most important.

“The local trains are my good friends,” N700 concluded. “Everyone has his strength. I shouldn't have been so proud.”
