Athena and Weirdhair
Imagine. Create. Share.
Since 2008, the Kids4Kids My Story Creation annual story writing and illustration competition has provided primary students across Hong Kong with a creative platform that enables the budding writers and artists to imagine, create and share their stories.
This story was written and illustrated by kid(s) who participated in the Kids4Kids annual 'My Story Creation competition'. We hope to celebrate all the kids who used their creativity and imagination to create a story by giving them an opportunity to custom print their story, and be able to share and inspire other kids to create their own story.
Proceeds from the sale of this custom print story will help fund the Literacy Development Programmes at Kids4Kids to provide creative learning opportunities to low resourced communities in Hong Kong. By buying a Kids4Kids custom print story, you are not only applauding the future artists & authors of Hong Kong but you are also making a difference in a child’s life!

Athena took a deep breath to enjoy the sweet scent of flowers and leaves in the hot air. The sun was bright but she didn't mind.

Scouting out a new path to the forest was a pleasure - she didn't mind doing it everyday.

Maybe the sun dazzled her eyes. Maybe she was concentrated on taking notes.

She didn't see a hole and fell into it. Then she fainted.

She woke up later, lying on a fluffy cloud, above a cottage. As she looked, an old man came out and said, pointing to his hair, “I'm WeirdHair.”

“That's pretty obvious.” Athena thought, but remained polite, “I'm Athena. Where am I?”

“How can I go back?” asked Athena.

WeirdHair said, “Well, if you collect the three virtues for me, I can help. But, there will be danger.”

”I'll do anything to get out of here.” said Athena.

“Well, brave fella,” WeirdHair said. “Here's a map showing where the chests are - Love, Care, Loyalty.”

Athena took the map and set off. She first arrived at a river and saw a witch in the water.

“She didn't look evil.” Athena thought, then shouted, “Don't worry! I'll get you!”.

She made a lasso from a vine and tied it around a big rock. She make another loop on the other end to lower herself down to the river.

She stretched out, reached for the witch and pulled her out of the water.

“I'm Mal! Who are you?”

“I'm Athena.” replied Athena and explained what she needed.

“Um,“ Mal paused, then went on,

“WeirdHair wants the angel - who knows where she is - to grant him a wish in exchange of three virtues. I'll give you the first chest and help you get the other two.”

They arrived at a volcano, where the second chest was kept behind a door.

Mal opened the door and stepped in. A big shadow flew towards her.

“How dare you come into my cave!” roared the shadow.

Athena stretched out her hands to protect Mal. Miracle! The dragon halted in mid-air.

Her action of care broke the spell and made the dragon their friend.

Athena quickly grabbed the chest and dragged Mal on board. They flew out, riding the dragon.

When they landed at a village, Athena felt a nudge in her bag but she wasn't alarmed and walked on. They arrived at a hut guarded by a monkey.

“Welcome. You've come this far helping each other, and earned the chest.”

But when Athena put it into the bag, the other two chests were gone!

“It can't be!”screamed Athena, “It must be the thief!”

They thought the thief would certainly come back for the third chest. So they hid and waited. When the thief appeared, the dragon overpowered him and recovered all the chests.

Then, they flew to the cottage. After they landed, Mal quietly said, “The angel is locked up behind the cottage. We'll free her.”

As Mal distracted WeirdHair, Athena freed the angel and locked up WeirdHair instead.

Then Athena opened the chests and, to her surprise, all chests were empty!

“You see now.” the angel said. “WeirdHair thinks once he gets the chests, he gets the virtues. But the virtues can't be locked up. They should be used.”

The angel made a portal for Athena to go home, and made her promise to come back anytime.
